I can still remember it like it was yesterday. Roll into the house for lunch, and you walk in to the amazing smell of butter, toasted bread, melted cheese, and tomato soup! The good old days of cheddar cheese and bread as a meal may not happen as much as they used to for us adults, but they still can be delicious!
Now, of course, as I have grown older, my taste buds have changed. Hence, why I have leveled up my game to create what my wife and I consider the best Adult Grilled Cheese! My favorite kind of bread for these is, of course, sourdough… It’s just so dang good! Of equal importance are some of the other add-ins, like bacon and either thinly sliced apple or pears. When you combine all of these with a really high-quality cheese, the sweet, salty, and buttery combo is pure bliss!
I highly recommend you give these a try and get creative with your own versions. Make sure to share a comment with your go-to combo!
As always, I will now walk through a few of the key ingredients and cooking tips to help you crush this meal and be the dinner time hero:
- Bread – I mentioned this above, but my go-to is sourdough. The fresher the better! Of course, Italian and French can work as well. It’s all up to your personal preference (which is the best part of being an adult)
- Fruit – I have tried apples and pears thus far. In the perfect situation where they are both ripe, my preference has slightly leaned toward pears.
- Cheese – This is definitely one of the most important pieces of the whole sandwich. I have tried smoked provolone, multiple different types of gruyere, but recently found my absolute favorite, which is Sark ButterKase. It sounds fancy, and it tastes fancy! Definitely worth a try.

Adult Grilled Cheese
Equipment
- Griddle
Ingredients
- Sourdough bread my preference
- Butter
- Cooked Bacon
- Thinly sliced pears or apples
- Sark ButterKase or Gruyère Cheese
Instructions
- Cook the bacon to your liking
- Sliced the pears or apples. (I like them pretty thin, but you can slice them to your preference.)
- Shred the cheese.
- Butter the bread and make sure to place it on the pan butter side down.
- Build the sandwich. Some cheese, then bacon, more cheese, then fruit, more cheese, then the top piece of bread. This will hold it all together!
- Cook on a griddle until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is ooey gooey!
- Enjoy!
