The Best Caramelized Onions Ever!

Caramelized Onions can completely level up a steak or burger, especially when they taste as good as these! After making this recipe, your only regret is that going out for a steak dinner will never be the same again.

I understand that sounds like a bold statement, but for us, it’s the truth. Most restaurants don’t have the time to let their onions slow-cook to perfection—it takes too much time. And even if they have the most perfectly cooked, high-quality cuts of meat, taking the time to properly do the sides/toppings will always make them a little better. The garlic and Worcestershire flavors slow-cooking into the onions, paired with the butter and hint of spice, pack a delightful punch. If you want to enhance them more, add in some thinly sliced mushrooms (and just add 1 more Tbsp of butter)!

Let’s talk cooking tips:

  • Cast Iron Pan – Do you need it? Absolutely not. Does it help? In my opinion, yes. Cast iron holds a consistent level of heat and can help maintain the ‘low and slow’ process these onions require.
  • Low and Slow – I cannot emphasize this enough, if you want the best results, these need to be cooked on low heat for a minimum of 30 minutes (sometimes I cook mine for an hour). In the beginning, they will look like they are barely even cooking, but over time they will get a nice, deep golden color that you will have dreams about! After 15-20 minutes, if you need to speed things up, you can slowly adjust the heat.  The time allows all the flavors to soak in.
  • Mushrooms – Should you add them? If you like mushrooms, you absolutely should (especially if you are topping a steak). The same cooking rules apply; you may just need 1 Tbsp more of butter!
